Homemade yogurt easier than you think!
Hello! Finally I get to share this recipe with you! I’ve been working on this for several weeks now, and I’m finally very happy with the result!
This is a proper set yoghurt – the kind that firms up in its jar without needing to be stirred. It’s smooth, delicately tangy, and made with just a few ingredients. Think classic French-style yoghurt pots – but totally plant-based.
If you’ve struggled with runny or overly tart homemade yoghurts before, this one’s for you. It holds its shape beautifully, scoops straight from the jar, and is perfect on its own, topped with fruit, or even served alongside spicy dishes as a cooling side.

The Recipe
How good this turns out depends on the ingredients you start with! I have used fresh unsweetened oat milk from Oato – available from a doorstop delivery, Sainsbury’s or Waitrose. I have then used Coconut Collaborative Gut Health yogurt – as this is a plain yogurt full of lots of good bacteria. Lastly, I have used agar agar powder (rather than flakes) as I have found this more accurate to measure. You can of course, add to your yogurt or, try a different milk! I have used Strawberry milk to make a strawberry yogurt and added half a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract for a more vanilla-y taste.

- 1 pint (568ml) oat milk (ideally fresh unsweetened – I use Oato)
- 1/2 teaspoon agar agar powder (powder is preferable over flakes)
- 100 g plain yogurt with live bacteria (I use Coconut Collaborative Gut Health)
-
Pour the milk into a saucepan, sprinkle the agar agar over and whisk in.
-
Turn the heat on, and bring the milk to the boil. Turn it off just as the milk is rising up the pan! (Watch it carefully).
-
Set a timer for at least 10 minutes. Go away and leave the milk to cool.
-
Check the temperature. It needs to be 44c (or just under). Likely at this stage, it will be around 57c. Set another timer for 5 minutes. Repeat this until it is almost ready.
-
Ensure your jar is ready. Measure your yogurt out.
-
When the milk is at 44c, add all the yogurt and whisk in until it has combined with the milk (a few small lumps are fine). A spoon also works, but a whisk is more efficient. Pour it into your jar (s) immediately and close the lid.
-
Wrap your yogurt up and place somewhere where it can sit for at least 6 hours.
-
Have a look at it – it should have set. Dip a clean spoon in and have a taste. Leave it a bit longer if it needs more yogurty tang. Repeat until it is ready.
-
Unwrap your yogurt from it's cosy wrap and place in the fridge. Wait until it is cold.
-
Serve & Enjoy!
What do I need?
Hopefully you already have most of what you need for this yoghurt – it’s a simple recipe, but a couple of key tools really help. These links go straight to Amazon, where you can browse as usual. If you follow these links, Amazon might pay us a small commission, which helps cover the cost of running the site. We really appreciate it – thank you!
You might find these useful:
– Glass jars or yoghurt pots
– A digital thermometer
– Small saucepan
– Measuring jug or spoon set
– Agar powder (for helping the yoghurt set)
Nutrition
This yoghurt is made with live cultures, which introduce beneficial bacteria to support a healthy gut. These natural probiotics can aid digestion, promote a balanced microbiome, and contribute to overall digestive wellbeing.
Serving
Enjoy your set yoghurt straight from the jar, topped with fresh fruit, a drizzle of maple syrup, or a sprinkle of granola. It’s perfect as part of breakfast, a light snack, or even a simple dessert. Best served chilled for the ideal texture and taste. I have also been enjoying mine layered with chocolate chia pudding!

Storing
Once made, keep the yoghurt jars in the fridge. They’ll last for around 5 days (if you can resist that long). Make sure the jars are sealed or covered. As this is a set yoghurt, you may notice a little natural separation with some liquid on top, this is completely normal. You can either pour the liquid off, or add it to your bowl (it tastes good).
