Mothering Sunday.
If, like me, you no longer have your own mother living, or, if you are not or no longer a mother yourself, the coming weekend can bring all sorts of emotions back to the surface. In the last few weeks I have had so many emails from companies asking me if I would like to ‘opt out’ of mothers day emails. Except, they just sent one.
Everyone at some point in their lives, had a mother or a mother figure who looked after them. Hopefully a good experience with lots of lovely memories to cherish. Although my Mother is no longer with us, I will still think of her and reminisce on Mothers Day especially. Mother’s Day in the UK, if you failed to notice, is this coming Sunday (15th March 2026). Fabulously, spring seems to have decided to show up right on cue. After months of grey skies and winter coats, the shops, gardens, woodlands and garden centres are suddenly full of colour again. It’s like nature knows it’s time to celebrate mums, aunties, grandmothers, and all the wonderful people who look after us.
The good news is there is still plenty of time to get organised before Sunday. A simple bunch of flowers, a homemade cake, and a thoughtful card can make the day feel really special.

Spring flowers popping up everywhere
What flowers have you noticed popping up? My garden is almost ready to burst into full tulip mode with bundles of green leaves popping up in my borders and pots. My front garden is less ferocious but no less beautiful with dots of tiny violets and pockets of white, yellow and purple crocus. Of course, somewhere in all of those, some daffodils (or narcissi) will make an appearance – no doubt a wonderful burst of yellow will one morning surprise me!
If you have no outside space of your own, perhaps you have noticed the spring flowers suddenly appearing in the shops? Big bunches of daffodil stems packed in buckets at supermarkets and greengrocers. They might not look much as they are sold with their heads closed, but pop them in a vase and they will open out into a bunch of sunshine! They’re cheerful, affordable and last surprisingly well in a vase.
Tulips are another favourite this time of year. They start off neat and upright but gradually open and stretch as the days go by, sometimes bending in the most artistic ways. These can be more colourful with pinks, reds, yellows, multicoloured, whites, and purples.

If you’re heading to a garden centre, you’ll probably see tables full of primulas. These little flowering plants come in all sorts of bright colours and can last far longer than a cut bouquet, which makes them a nice option if you want something that will either brighten the house for a few weeks or stay longer planted in pots outside.
Bake a cake (homemade shows effort)
If you’re thinking of baking something for Mother’s Day, this is the perfect excuse. Homemade cakes always feel that little bit more thoughtful than something bought last minute.
If your mum enjoys a classic flavour, a coffee cake is always a winner. It’s one of those comforting bakes that pairs perfectly with a relaxed afternoon coffee. Light, fluffy and just sweet enough.

If you prefer something a little fresher, a St. Clements cake (orange and lemon) feels wonderfully spring-like. The bright flavours work really well this time of year when we’re all ready for something lighter – and my Mother endorsed this as the best cake ever!

Chocolate lovers, of course, are usually happiest with brownies. Rich, fudgy and dangerously easy to keep ‘just trying another small piece’. Customise these to your Mum’s favourite flavours – biscoff, peanut butter, or even double chocolate with a layer of chocolate sandwiched inbetween.
If you are looking for something other than cake, cookies can be an alternative option. A small plate of homemade cookies beside a cup of coffee can feel wonderfully indulgent without being too heavy.
Of course, you could opt for savouries with a cheese scone, sausage roll or some other puff pastry creations! Or, perhaps you are going all out and making breakfast in bed, cooking lunch or preparing dinner? (check if your Mum might be partaking in Lent or Ramadan to ensure you get it right)!

Easy gifts that still feel thoughtful
If baking is something you usually let your Mum do and you are not confident enough to have a try on your own, a small thoughtful gift can still make someone feel really appreciated.
Candles are always a lovely option. A simple scented candle can make the whole house feel calm and cosy. Softer scents like vanilla, lavender or warm bakery-style fragrances tend to be popular and relaxing.
Another easy idea is (vegan) chocolate. There are so many chocolate options available now that you should be able to find something suitable. Even, a small gift pack or a well thought out nice chocolate bar can show that you’ve made the effort.
Have a look at these suggestions on Amazon – we may receive a commission at no expense to you if you click through our links. This helps with website hosting fees. Have a look at candles in tins, multipack tealights, chocolate selections, some very special chocolates (they are fabulous)! or specific Mothers Day items.
Remember the card
It sounds obvious, but cards are the one thing people often remember at the last minute. A card, with a thoughtful message can be the one thing that is kept and treasured long after the flowers have wilted and the chocolates have been eaten.
A handmade card made with love and care, can be just as welcome as a shop-bought one – often more so. A bit of coloured paper, a drawing, a poem, some stickers, or even just a thank you and suddenly you’ve got something that will probably be kept forever.
Even a simple handwritten message on a nice piece of paper can mean a lot. Sometimes it’s easy to forget to say thank you for all the little things (and big things)! mums do each and every day.

A simple way to celebrate
Mother’s Day can definitely still be done on a budget! Often the nicest celebrations are the simplest ones. Just. Spending. TIME. Together. To show you care. To show your appreciation.
Or…
A cup of coffee together.
A slice of homemade cake.
A bunch of cheerful spring flowers on the table.
Sometimes that’s all you need.
However you celebrate, I hope the day includes lots of love, something colourful, and a little moment to pause and enjoy the start of spring.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums and mother figures out there. 🌼

It’ll be a subdued one for our family this year as it’s also the memorial weekend for my baby niece’s 1 year memorial x
Of course – you may have noticed I had your family in mind when I wrote the introduction. Thinking of you all and sending strength and best wishes your way. x
