Super shakes!
Last week, I (unintentionally) went with a friend to a different café, and to my surprise, they had a range of vegan milkshakes on the menu. As the UK continues to experience this extended hot weather, making milkshakes at home has become the perfect way to stay cool and satisfied. From classic flavours like chocolate and vanilla to creative combinations featuring fresh fruit, these milkshakes are not only refreshing but also filling, offering a delightful treat that can almost double as a meal when you’re too tired to cook. With so many options to cater to every taste, it’s time to whip up these easy, creamy milkshakes right in your own kitchen.
The Milkshake Base Recipe
To create your base recipe, use a glass of your favourite milk (I use oat for extra creaminess), along with a frozen banana or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can add a splash of vanilla extract to enhance the flavour if you wish – especially if you are having the milkshake as it is. Put it all in a high speed blender and pulse until smooth and creamy.
No blender? No problem:
If you don’t have a blender, you can still enjoy a milkshake by using a mixing bowl and a hand whisk or an immersion blender. Mash frozen bananas or fruits thoroughly with a fork and mix in your milk and any flavourings. For a creamier texture, you can use a hand mixer or a food processor. If you’re using ice cream, let it soften slightly before stirring it into the mixture.
Easy Flavour Ideas
Strawberry milkshake: Add a handful of frozen (or fresh) strawberries and/or a scoop of strawberry ice cream.
Chocolate Milkshake: Mix in 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and/or a scoop of chocolate ice cream.
Coffee Milkshake: Add 1 shot of espresso or 2 tablespoons of instant coffee for a coffee kick.
Berry Mix Milkshake: Combine a handful of mixed berries (such as blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries) with a scoop of vanilla or berry ice cream.
Special Milkshakes
Biscoff Milkshake: Blend in 2 tablespoons of Biscoff spread and a sprinkle of crushed Biscoff biscuits.
Oreo Milkshake: Add 4-5 Oreo cookies and an extra scoop of ice cream.
Salted Caramel Milkshake: Stir in 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce and a pinch of sea salt.
Mango Milkshake: Add in a cup of frozen mango chunks and a splash of coconut milk.
Peanut Butter Milkshake: Stir in 2 tablespoons of peanut butter for a rich, nutty flavour.
Mint Chocolate Milkshake: Blend in a few drops of mint extract and a handful of chocolate chips or a scoop of mint chocolate ice cream.
Milkshake Extras
There are countless ways to elevate your milkshake from regular to extraordinary. While blending, consider adding an extra scoop of ice cream, another frozen banana, or a scoop of protein powder for added richness. A spoon or two of yogurt or cream can also enhance the texture and flavour – and are great for using up the end of a pot! These simple additions can make your milkshake even more satisfying and enjoyable.
Milkshake Toppings
Decorate your milkshake with a range of delicious toppings. Try a squirt of vegan cream or a swirl of yogurt then top with granola, fresh fruit, chocolate chips, sprinkles, crushed biscuits (or whole ones) or a drizzle of chocolate or maple syrup. You could also add nuts, seeds, a sprinkle of cocoa powder or your favourite spice to add a unique twist and enhance the overall taste.
Serving
Serve your milkshake in your favourite glass, with or without a straw. I would advise making these fresh when you want them as they only take a couple of minutes to make. If you want to add toppings, think about them before you start so they’re ready to add. Of course, you could always serve them alongside some brownies or a slice of cake!
