First third of the year gone already!
Well, the weather has certainly surprised us this Spring! One day it’s a cloudy 17°c, and the next, we’re swanning around in a very warm 27°c. The British weather never ceases to amaze! The sun has been gracing us for a few days now, but yesterday, the heat really made itself known – and yes, it was still technically April! It’s as if summer decided to pop in early and catch us all off guard.
There’s a Bank Holiday on the horizon, so chances are the weather will do its usual disappearing act just in time for the long weekend… but while it’s here, I’m absolutely going to enjoy it!
The Greenhouse is loving it
This sudden warmth has given everything in the greenhouse a good boost. The cucumbers, various beans, mini corn, and beetroot are all thriving. Speaking of beetroot – I had some old seed packets lying around, so I just threw them in a spare patch, not expecting much… now I’m overrun with tiny shoots! Proof that sometimes, throwing caution (and seeds!) to the wind really can pay off.
Tomatoes, however, are being a bit reluctant, and the peppers and aubergines are still small. But with this extra heat and sunshine, I’m hoping they’ll catch up soon.
Have you seen all the ‘Spring’ flowers too? Bluebells are bursting out into a sea of blue everywhere and their sent is wonderful… let’s stop and smell the bluebells!!!

Staying Cool & Hydrated
With this sudden heat, we need to look after ourselves and the garden. A few quick reminders for hot days:
- Hydration is key: Start the day with a big glass of water. I still need my morning coffee, but I’m making sure to drink more water throughout the day too. If plain water’s not your thing, add lemon, cucumber, or a few berries for a summery twist.
- Water early or late: Plants need a good soak before the sun gets too hot, or after it’s dipped in the evening. It helps them absorb water without losing too much to evaporation.
- Create shade: If you’ve got a greenhouse, some temporary shade cloth might be helpful. And don’t forget your furry friends – rabbits, guinea pigs, and other outdoor pets need cool spots and plenty of fresh water too.
- Care for yourself: Loose, light clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of breaks in the shade. Even a parasol or an umbrella can work wonders if you’re out in the sun for a while.
Enjoy the Moment
This unexpected sunshine is a reminder of how quickly things can shift – and how important it is to embrace those changes when they come. Take time to slow down, tweak your routine, and make space to just be. Maybe that’s experimenting with fresh summer recipes, picking herbs straight from the garden, or just sitting quietly with a good book and an iced drink, feeling the warmth on your skin.
Remember the Vitamin D
If you’ve been waiting all winter for a natural boost, now’s your chance. Just 10–15 minutes of sun on your skin can help your body produce vitamin D – great for your bones, mood, and immune system. Do remember though to protect your skin. We want the benefits, not sunburn!
Soak it up whilst it lasts
This early burst of heat might not stick around for long – we know how quickly the weather can change! For now, it’s a lovely excuse to press pause, head outside, and soak up the sunshine. Whether you’re pottering in the garden, sipping something cold, or just sitting still for five minutes, make space to enjoy it.
The lists and chores will still be there tomorrow… but days like these are worth holding onto.
