Be Positive… Say no!

A contradiction?

Today, I am leaving this open for discussion!

be positive

Positivity

Are you a positive person or a negative person? Have you ever thought about it? How would your friends and family describe you? Do you see the good in everything? Do you always notice the bad things? Are you great at seeing both sides of the story?

Language

Your choice of words can really impact on those around you. Many years ago when I did training to be a Positive Parenting Co-Facilitator there was a specific activity which really stood out. The idea is, that for every negative sentence or word you are going to use, you change to a positive. The human brain although incredibly clever, has a tendancy to focus on the command that was heard last, for example:

Don’t run across the road – is heard as – run across the road!

You shouldn’t draw on the wall – is heard as – draw on the wall!

Following this pattern we can relate this to our lives, how often do you hear or even say negative words? You shouldn’t eat xyz if you want to lose weight; don’t say yes if you’re busy…

Alternatives

Can you think how the above sentences could be changed? Once you think about the desired action, this becomes much easier to implement.

Walk please or walk across/near the road – is heard as it is

Here’s some paper / Draw on the paper please – is heard as it is

Eat more fruit and vegetables to keep you fuller – is heard as it is

Say no if you are busy – is heard as it is

Conflicting Opinion

Back to my original quote: Be positive… say no!

What could help?

This may seem a bit alien when you first start trying to change your words, but here are a few things which you may find useful. Having visual reminders and writing things down can really help to reinforce behaviour. I would love to know your thoughts on this topic! I know I usually post a recipe, but sometimes we need to expect the unexpected! How is your spoken positivity? Are there phrases or words you use often which you could change? Are you wondering how to change something in particular? Ask away and I’ll see if I can help!

I hope to speak with you soon
