October!
This time of year is becoming much more popular in the UK and already I have driven past several fields full of orange, white, green, yellow and stripy pumpkins and squashes of varying shapes and sizes! Hopefully, the days of carving an orange pumpkin, then discarding it are behind us all and you are a bit more #FoodSavvy with these delicious Autumnal fruits. Yes, technically squashes and pumpkins are classed as fruits, but they are so versatile they can be used in sweet or savoury dishes. Anyway, the new trend is to paint your pumpkin, or stick things on it, so the flesh stays intact ready for you to eat! Hooray!
Food Waste
There are still a LOT of pumpkins which will get discarded! According to the environmental charity Hubbub, a staggering 15 million in the UK! However, this is less than half of those which will be bought, so the figures are at least going in the right direction! Please make sure you #eatyourpumpkin
A few pumpkin recipes
There are so many things you can make with your pumpkins, here are a few of my favourite:
Pumpkin Gnocchi – a great customisable recipe suitable for everyone, easy to disguise the pumpkin!
Pumpkin & Apple Loaf Cake – a loaf cake full of seasonal flavours
Pumpkin Puff Pastry Rings – sweet & spiced sticky puff pastries
What do I need?
There are so many pumpkin themed items around at the moment! Here are a few ideas if you are looking to add to your seasonal items! I may receive a small commission if you click and purchase through these links (this is at no additional cost to you)!
Serving
Serve your pumpkin foods with the knowledge that you are saving good food from going to waste!
Storing
Did you know you can store pumpkins and squashes for several months and they’ll still be tasty! Make sure they are free from blemishes, have the stalk intact and are dry. Place them in a cool place – ideally on some newspaper and recheck them every so often.
Sharing
Share your pumpkin foods with everyone so more people know what a fantastic food it is! What pumpkin foods are you going to try first?
