It’s easy to make your own delicious baked beans

Beans.

What do you think of when you think of beans? How about when you think of beans on toast? If I asked about a jacket potato and beans? If you are in the UK, likely is, there is a certain brand of beans in a tin you will think of whenever you think of beans! Of course, there is nothing wrong with that, the famous brand has been selling tinned beans for over 100 years and their slogan has been around for over 60 of those! Sometimes though, homemade beans are just what you need.

The Beans Recipe

This recipe is made to be as easy as possible! You need tinned tomatoes (or fresh if you want) or passata, and your favourite beans, either dried and rehydrated, tinned in water or from a pouch. Next you need a few different spices such as paprika, garlic granules, black pepper, onion granules, ground cumin and a bit of salt. You can add sugar if you wish, or sub cinnamon for sweetness. You can go spicy with ground chilli, or chilli flakes. Try barbecue beans by adding sugar, smoked paprika or liquid smoke.

Gather
  • 1 x 400g Tinned tomatoes
  • 400 ml water (measure in the tin)
  • 1 or 2 x 400g tins of beans (cannellini, haricot, butter, kidney etc)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic granules
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon paprika (regular/mild)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • salt to taste
  • *optional 1 teaspoon sugar (or 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon)
  • *optional pinch of cumin
  • *optional 1/2 teaspoon onion granules
Prepare
  1. Tip the tomatoes into a large pan and add the water (use the can so you get all the juice out). Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat.

  2. Drain your beans, then add to the tomatoes. Allow to cook through for 10 minutes.

  3. Add the garlic, paprika and pepper and stir through. Season with salt if using. Add optional spices and taste test – adjust as necessary.

  4. Cover and allow to cook until the sauce has thickened. Do a final taste test and adjust seasoning if needed.

  5. Enjoy!

What do I need?

These have been created to be as easy as possible, but of course you can (as with most of my recipes), make these more complicated if you wish! Try barbecued black beans, curried butter beans or chilli kidney beans! Whatever you try, here are a few useful things for this recipe. I receive a small commission if you click and purchase through these links (this is at no additional cost to you)!

Serving

You can serve your beans with a jacket potato, with rice, on toast, as a side to a breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Eat them hot, eat them cold, dress them up with fresh herbs, sprinkle with cheese or just eat them as they are!

Storage

These beans should store well in the fridge for at least three days. Put them in a sealed pot or cover them with a silicon lid. You can add a bit of water to reheat (the sauce will thicken on storage).
