Need Spice? You’ll love this Salsa!

Are you in a food rut and need to spice up your meals? Do you need something quick and easy to add flavour to your lunch or dinner? Fancy a quick dip for your nachos or a spread for your sandwiches? Serve this with sausages, burgers, or scrambled egg. This spicy salsa can be on the table in less than five minutes! 😀

Oddments in the fridge…

Are your tomatoes looking a bit past their prime and you don’t want to add to the food waste? Do you have a lonely spring onion (or chunk of onion) just sitting there wilting? Well, then you really must make this salsa!

This salsa can of course be made as spicy or as mild as you like, the important thing is to not waste any produce that you think can’t be consumed!

What is in it?

So, you may have guessed that you need tomato and onion, the rest is up to you and the taste of the tomato. Almost definitely you will need salt; paprika is great for depth of flavour and more colour; black pepper is always a great addition and sprinkle of garlic can really take this up a notch. I’ve added a sprinkle of basil for a more Italian taste, but you can do without and it will still be great. The spice… once you have your sauce ready, add in flaked chilli bit by bit until you almost have the perfect heat. Stop just before it is too hot, as the flavour will intensify the longer you leave the salsa. Ta da… chop, cook, spice, stir, eat! 😛

Salsa ready for dipping…

Is it Complicated?

Here’s a very brief recipe for you… just in case you’ve never made a salsa before!

Spicy Salsa

5 minute salsa for dipping, dunking or spreading!

Keyword: salsa, tomatoes
Serves: 1 serving
Created by:: Laurena @LifeDietHealth
Gather
  • 1 spring onion (or 1/8 regular onion) diced
  • 1 medium tomato diced
  • 2-3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • salt to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic granules
  • sprinkle of red chilli flakes
  • *optional pinch basil
  • *optional pinch sugar
Prepare
  1. Put the spring onion in a frying pan on a low heat and allow to wilt before adding the tomato. Stir to cook and add water a splash at a time if the salsa gets too dry. The tomatoes should break down and become saucy.

  2. Add paprika, salt, pepper and garlic and mix through. Do a taste test then add the chilli flakes bit by bit until the desired taste is achieved. Add optional extras if used.

  3. Serve with tortilla chips, vegetables, as a dipping sauce for nuggets, or as a spread for sandwiches (cheese or ham work well).

  4. Increase quantities to make a larger batch. Salsa can be refrigerated in a covered container for 3 days.

  5. Enjoy!
