Puff Pastry Ideas

You might think of puff pastry as something that you are not too fussed about, but it is a fantastic fridge (or freezer) standby for so many things! For example, you can make a quick and tasty meal, a dessert, breakfast or even just a snack! As you may have guessed, I’m talking ready made puff pastry! You could make your own, but unless you have loads of time (and loads of butter) and like getting very messy! then I would use your time for something else! Shop bought puff pastry can be fresh or frozen, in blocks or sheets. Generally, you will find the pastry to be vegan, but some (especially chilled versions) do contain alcohol (as a preservative) so always check the ingredients if either of these concern you.

Now, this really is up to you! Think of what you like? What have you tried before? Do you have something in the fridge or pantry that you could use up? Here are a few fillings suggestions for you:

Breakfast: Peanut Butter; Jam; Chocolate Spread; Vegan Frittata

Main Meals: Vegetable Sausages; Vegetable & Bean Chilli; Chickpea Curry; Mixed vegetables with cheese;

Snacks: Cream Cheese & Pesto; Date paste with cinnamon (it’s what cinnamon whirls are made of)! ;

Desserts: Apples & Cinnamon; Cream Cheese & Apricots; Maple Syrup & Pecans.

How do I make it?

Puff pastry is one of those brilliant materials which is very forgiving! The main thing is to ensure that whatever shapes you make, the pastry is as fully sealed as possible before baking.

I would suggest either making a roll (think sausage roll), or an envelope – parcel shape if you are new to puff pastry. For the more adventurous you could make little money bags or spirals.

You can brush the tops of the pastry with melted butter, or milk and sprinkle with sugar, spices, seeds, or nuts.

Bake according to the packet instructions (usually around Gas Mark 6, 400F / 200c for around 15-25 minutes) and the size of your pastries.
