Put on Purple… served with ice-cream!

Put on Purple… served with ice-cream!

I wasn’t intending to post today as I should really have ‘one’ rest day in my – “I’m having a rest week”! Never mind – maybe at the weekend I can get some rest! 😀

So, why am I posting and what’s all this about purple? Well, the month of May is Lupus month (as well as Fibromyalgia and M.E. awareness month too) and today (Friday 20th May) is Put On Purple for Lupus day! 😀

lupus POP

Okay, so I’m in the wrong country as this is a USA event but hey – Lupus is Lupus and the more people who become aware of it the better! 🙂 For those of you who are unaware, Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease, which basically means it is a long term condition in which the body attacks itself! Yes, the body can’t distinguish between invaders and normal healthy tissue, so it just attacks and destroys healthy tissue! Thanks Lupus! 🙁

Most people with Lupus don’t look sick! Do I look sick??? No, most of the time I don’t! 😀 BUT… that doesn’t mean that people with Lupus don’t have pain, inflammation, fatigue and a whole host of hidden symptoms. Can you tell if someone has Lupus? No. Can you catch Lupus? No. Can you tell if someone is having a bad day? No! Not generally!

Here’s a few facts about Lupus. Please #PutOnPurple today and help create awareness for this hidden illness!

As we’re doing purple, how about a bit of as-purple-as-I-can-naturally-get ice-cream to go with that? Here’s a very quick, nutritious and delicious dairy free ice-cream…

It’s so cool that you associated Put on Purple day with ice cream! Here in the states (well here in Florida) they are having a lupus event at all of the Menchies ice cream shops. And 20 percent of each purchase will go to the Lupus Foundation of America. But I think I may have to try your frozen treat. It looks and sounds yummy 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    • Life Diet Health 20th May 2016 at 17:33

WOW! That’s amazing! 🙂 I’ve never seen Lupus promoted anywhere in UK – not even really in the Lupus unit at the London hospital!!! I’d love to go and get ice-cream knowing that 20% was for a Lupus charity! Actually I’d love to go and get ice-cream too! 😛 Yes… do try this purple! ice-cream it’s so yummy even hubby was eating it! Thank you. I hope you’re having a good day 🙂

      • Purple Butterfly 20th May 2016 at 21:40

Yeah it’s great! I’ve seen a few lupus videos from the UK I’ve posted a few on my blog page. Other than that I haven’t really seen any lupus promotions in the UK either. But ice cream is awesome and yes you should get some. .. or eat some of what you made. I think I’ll try the recipe you gave over the weekend. My day has been good, I hope the same for you 🙂

        • Life Diet Health 20th May 2016 at 22:09

I’ll check out your blog over the weekend 🙂 Yes… do make some of this quick and lovely ice cream – it’s very moreish, which is fine as it’s full of healthy stuff! 🙂 Glad you had a good day… mine was a rest day! 🙂

Thanks Linda. I hope you’re having fun co-hosting 🙂 Lupus is not such a well known illness in the UK but hopefully that will change soon! 🙂

      • Linda 20th May 2016 at 19:42

        Yes, hopefully! 🙂

This is quite a helpful and informative post, thank you for sharing this. I have certain symptoms that mimic Lupus, but they are still doing a whole host of tests and other blood work to determine if this is the case. I love that ice cream, I make it with frozen bananas too, I must add some berries to the mix the next time around.

    • Life Diet Health 22nd May 2016 at 11:05

Oh Loretta I hope your symptoms aren’t too bad and don’t cause you too much pain and discomfort? It took over 6 years for me to be diagnosed – keeping a track of your symptoms so you can relay them is useful (I always forget when I’m sitting in my rheumatologists office)! as they need to know you have more than one symptom at once! As for bloods, ANA is the most useful but even this can show up different each time you have it tested! I love this ice cream and adding berries gives it a whole new dimension (& nutrient boost)! 🙂 Hope you’re having a great weekend & having fun co-hosting. 🙂

The frozen treat looks delicious and is a great idea for bringing attention to the disease. I’m surprised that lupus isn’t better known in the UK – the first time I ever heard of lupus was in connection to Seal back in the 1990s. Immune disorders are so poorly understood and need better recognition. Love you recipes!

    • Life Diet Health 22nd May 2016 at 11:54

Yes it truly is delicious. Thank you 🙂 Lupus is becoming slightly more well known but just this week I found myself explaining it to an academic! I have noticed the word slipped into a few TV programmes but unless you’re really listening and follow it up that’s not too much help! We do have a few support groups but unless you’re a paid up subscriber to Lupus UK you don’t get the meeting details and therefore can’t attend! That doesn’t help with awareness either as the groups aren’t publicised! Hopefully it will gradually become better known and more research will be carried out 🙂

  • Angie | Fiesta Friday 21st May 2016 at 23:38

I actually just found out one of my high school classmates (from the whatsapp chat) passed last year from lupus. So sad…she was so pretty, probably the prettiest among the girls. And I didn’t even know lupus was such a serious condition. So thanks for this, Laurena!

    • Life Diet Health 22nd May 2016 at 12:03

Oh wow… that’s very sad. Yes, people aren’t generally aware of the seriousness of the condition until it personally affects someone that they know. More research and awareness is definitely needed – particularly in the UK. It took over 6 years of GP and rheumatology visits as well as almost every test imaginable to rule out everything else before I was diagnosed.

    • Life Diet Health 25th May 2016 at 16:13

Yumyum… isn’t it amazing how something so simple can be so delicious Sophie!? 🙂 Thank you x
