Whip up these delicious cheese scones in 20 minutes

Sometimes, I want something savoury that’s quick to prepare, but not necessarily toast (with Marmite)! This weekend was one of those occasions and after a very quick think, I decided to whip up a batch of these delicious cheese scones! Made with just a few simple ingredients, including vegan cheese, butter, milk and flour, these scones are so quick to prepare you’ll be making them all the time!

If you are in the USA, likely you would call these cheese scones ‘biscuits’ and serve them with gravy as part of a savoury breakfast dish. However, in the UK, scones are a traditionally eaten as an afternoon snack with a variety of toppings. Whether you prefer the American or British interpretation, these vegan cheese scones are sure to please and become a household staple.

If you prefer your scones sweet, try making these traditional scones and serve with jam and cream… or cream and jam!

The Cheese Scone Recipe

This recipe has very simple ingredients that you will likely already have in – so you can set about making them immediately! You can add in your favourite herbs if you wish, or even some precooked onions. Choose your favourite cheese, add nutritional yeast or not, your scones, your way.

  • 200 g plain flour
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 3 teaspoons nutritional yeast
  • 65 g butter
  • 50-100 g cheese of choice (grated)
  • 80-100 ml milk
  1. Put the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl and mix together. Add the nutritional yeast if using.
  2. Rub in the butter using your fingertips until you have a breadcrumb consistency. Add the grated cheese.
  3. Add the milk gradually and mix together until you have a smooth dough (it should be smooth not sticky).
  4. Roll out (you can change the thickness to suit your needs) and cut into rounds using a fluted pastry cutter. Place spaced out on a lined or greased baking tray.
  5. Bake at Gas mark 6 (400f / 200c) for 15 minutes. When cooked, the tops should be golden and the scones risen.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before eating! Serve split in half with butter and cheese! Store in an airtight container for 2-3 days or freeze (well wrapped) for up to 3 months.
  7. Change the recipe by adding in a handful of chopped chives or a tablespoon of caramelised onions before adding the milk.
  8. Enjoy!

What do I need?

You can (as with most of my recipes), make these scones as easy or complicated as you wish! I have created this recipe to be very quick and easy, but feel free to take your time making them all identical, top with extra cheese, add herbs, or sprinkle the tops with seeds.

If you are new to cooking or your kitchen needs a refresh, here are a few useful things for this recipe. I receive a small commission if you click and purchase through these links (this is at no additional cost to you)!

You can serve these as they are, warm or cold, slice in half and add butter, chutney, more cheese, tomato. Add them as a side to soup, or enjoy with a salad.

These do store quite well, either in an airtight container, or even in the fridge for 3-5 days. Why not make a few more and pop them in the freezer where they’ll store for up to three months. If freezing, portion or separate with greaseproof paper, label and freeze.

I hope you can spare five minutes to make these and wait the 15 minutes for them to cook! I love seeing your adaptions and interpretations of my recipes and I’d love to see your photos of cheese scones! Have a great day!
