Save your leftovers from waste and transform them into delicious Garlic Bread

Garlic Bread.

In our house, we often have garlic bread with a lasagne or spaghetti bolognese. This is something I have grown up with and never questioned it until recently, when an Italian friend told me this was something they never did! Italians do however, rub cut garlic on bruschetta and maybe add a drizzle of olive oil. Apparently, what I call garlic bread, I believe originated in America?

The Garlic Bread Recipe

You can make garlic bread with any savoury dough items that you have. The most obvious is a baguette, but you can use pizza bases, tortilla wraps, sliced bread, rolls, bagels, crumpets, muffins, even potato cakes. You can make this with fresh items, or you can transform some past-its-best items into something delicious!

You need your bread item, some butter, spread or oil, and some garlic. You can use fresh garlic (diced as small as you can), or dried garlic, or a bit of both. You can add a pinch of another herb if you like – rosemary works well, as does oregano, or even just mixed herbs. If you like spicy, a sprinkle of chilli flakes can be added. Just mix it all together, using suitable quantities (as a guide, 2 cloves and 1/4 teaspoon dried garlic with about 50g butter works well for a half baguette). Slice your bread if needed, then fill with your garlic butter (or oil). Bake in a medium heat oven for around 10 minutes. Enjoy!

What do I need?

You can use the method above to make your own garlic breads. Make it as simple as spreading butter on a piece of bread and sprinking with garlic granules before baking. Or, take a bit more time and slice your baguette diagonally, pre-mix your butter with chopped garlic and herbs, then carefully spread the butter inbetween the slices, then bake. You could even add some cheese to the mix, or top the bread with cheese once cooked.

If you are new to cooking or your kitchen needs a refresh, here are a few useful things for this recipe. I’ve even included a link to garlic puree which makes this bread even easier to make! receive a small commission if you click and purchase through these links (this is at no additional cost to you)!

Serving

You can serve your garlic bread on its own, or with your favourite meals. Ideally eat it fresh and hot, but it’s still tasty once its cooled down too!

Storage

I would suggest making what you need, when you need it, but it will keep for a few days in the fridge. Make sure you cover it well if storing otherwise everything else in the fridge will smell or taste of garlic! You can freeze any leftovers if you wish, just make sure to label and date.
