The Ultimate 2-Minute Beans on Toast Hack You Need to Try!

Beans!

You know when you’re in a hurry, need something filling and tasty but so easy – so you reach for a tin of beans, pop some toast in the toaster, and ta-da, beans on toast? Well, what if with just one extra step (maybe two), you could have an even more delicious, creamy, and nutritious version? Instead of just opening a tin of processed baked beans, check out this almost as quick and easy recipe idea to transform your meal in minutes.

This is not so much of a recipe, more of an open this, spoon that in, add that and oh my goodness why is this the first time I have done this moment!

Beans on Toast

Ajvar

Ajvar is a delicious Balkan red pepper spread, made from roasted red peppers, a touch of oil, and a pinch of salt. It’s naturally smoky, slightly sweet, and packed with flavour. You can find it ready-made in most supermarkets or make your own at home by blending roasted red peppers with olive oil and salt.

This simple addition elevates your beans, giving them a richer, deeper taste while adding extra nutrition. Red peppers are packed with vitamins and antioxidants, making this an easy way to sneak in one of your five-a-day without even trying. Plus, the natural sweetness of the peppers means there’s no need for added sugar—unlike the usual processed baked beans.

Nutrition

These homemade baked beans alternative are not just quick and tasty, they’re also a great way to enjoy natural flavours without added sugars. Here’s why:

Creamy and delicious: The combination of beans, ajvar, and garlic creates a smooth, rich texture.

More fibre and protein: Cannellini beans are naturally packed with both, keeping you fuller for longer.

Less sugar: Processed baked beans often contain added sugars. This recipe is naturally low in sugar.

One of your five-a-day: Thanks to the red peppers in ajvar, you’re getting extra vitamins and antioxidants.

Hopefully you already have everything you need for this recipe, but in case you’re new to baking and cooking, or just want a refresh, here are a few items you might like. These links will take you straight to Amazon where you can then search as usual for anything you need. If you follow these links, Amazon might pay us a small commission, which goes towards paying the website hosting fees. We’d be very grateful if you do, thank you! Have a look at these: tin openers, small saucepans, bread knife, toaster, plates, or even new cutlery and other items which you might need. Much appreciated!

Serving

Serve your beans on your favourite toast. My current favourite is a rye and spelt seeded sourdough – delicious toasted with a drizzle of olive oil over it before topping with the beans. You could also use the beans to top a jacket potato, serve with wedges, or just as a side to your meal.

Storing

The cooked beans will store in the fridge for a few days. They are so quick to make it’s much easier to make them fresh, rather than freeze and defrost.
